As the story goes... a cheese scraper (or cheese plane) has its origins in Norway in the early 20th century. It was invented in 1925 by carpenter Thor Bjørklund, who was inspired by traditional woodworking planes and adapted the idea to slice thin, even pieces of cheese from large blocks. He patented the design and founded the company Bjørklund 1925, which still produces cheese planes today. The tool became especially popular in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and Germany, where semi-hard cheeses are commonly served in thin slices rather than cut with a knife, and it eventually spread widely across Europe and beyond. The simple lever-and-blade design hasn't changed much since its invention because it’s highly effective: it creates consistent slices without crumbling the cheese, making it both a practical kitchen tool and a piece of everyday design history.
