Sheridans National Irish Brown Bread Competition

Inspired by the success at home and abroad of our Sheridans Irish Brown Bread Crackers; we are welcoming back our Brown Bread tent; showcasing that most quintessentially Irish of foods – Brown Bread. The Brown Bread Tent will feature demos and workshops for adults and kids, all Ireland competition, schools competitions and a bread making demo with Maura Sheridan.

RTE’s Ella McSweeney will be the announcing the winners as well as helping to judge the competition along with Seamus Sheridan and Kristin Jensen from Edible Ireland then of course, the woman who inspired the Sheridan brother’s love of brown bread, their mam Maura!

Information on the Competition:

  • The awards are open to anyone who has baked their brown bread entry at home.
  • There are three Categories: Main / Novice / Under 16
  • €5 fee per entry -advance payment if entering online, or pay on the day if submitting entry via post/email/in person
  • Any shape of bread is permitted, but we recommend 1lb weight loaves are used.
  • Marks out of 10 will be awarded for the breads and 1 point is available for “Irish Ingredients” .
  • Judging will take place at the festival and the breads must be in situ in the Brown Bread tent by 11am. (Its also possible to drop the bread to us on Saturday 23rd up to 7pm if preferred)
  • The overall winner will be announced in the afternoon – exact time will be confirmed on the day.
  • The overall winner will receive a cash prize of €150 plus a selection of Irish Foods including Irish flour from Macroom Oatmeal Mills and Dunany Organic Farm with which to keep making their brown bread.

You can submit your entry right up to the morning of the competition!

2.15pm – 2.45pm Brown Bread Demo with Mammy Sheridan – Maura  Hosted by Ella McSweeney
3.30pm Ella McSweeney will be announcing the winners of the Brown Bread Competitions!

2014 and Past Competitions

OVERALL WINNER OF THE BROWN BREAD COMPETITION 2014 WAS Collette Healy from Cork. The winning school in the onsite bake-off was Cannistown National School in Navan!

See The Full  Winners List from our 2nd Annual National Brown Bread Competition below. The breads were judged at our food festival on Sunday 25th May by Ella McSweeney, Maura Sheridan and Chapter One Pastry Chef Darren Hogarty.

The schools bake-off was held onsite also and four local teams each baked truly beautiful breads!
