Slarina Cenerina

About This Drink

Aromatically graceful, with a firm tannin profile, slarina is distinctively Piedmontese. Deirdre and Maurizio have named their first cuvée after the local word for slarina, which is derived from ‘cenere’ or ‘ash’, referring to the distinctive bloomy appearance the grapes on the vine.

Story

An old Piedmontese grape variety, slarina was widely uprooted in favour of the higher-yielding barbera in the early 20th century. Recent research at the University of Turin has led to an increase in plantings of this almost-forgotten variety.

Producer

We are delighted to be bringing the wines from Cascina Val Liberata into Ireland. This organic and biodynamic farm in Monferrato is the passion project of Deirdre O’Brien and Maurizio Caffer, who traded London for rural Piemonte nearly a decade ago and haven’t looked back. In addition to producing organic fruit, veg and honey, Deirdre and Maurizio rejuvenated an old vineyard on the property and planted it to slarina, a nearly-forgotten local grape that we have become big fans of here at GCHQ. They have since added another vineyard of nebbiolo vines, and if the slarina is anything to go by, it’s going to be killer. And not only are the wines amazing, but Deirdre is a native of Co. Offaly and dontcha know we love a good Irish connection.
