Description
Oxer Matalaz
The uncanny label is in reference to Matalaz was a priest who led a popular uprising against the nobility, fighting for the interests of the peasants, but his struggle against the French army failed. He was beheaded, and his head was displayed at the entrance to the city as a warning to the people.
Oxer Matalaz comes from old, mixed vineyards in Lapuebla de Labarca in Rioja Alavesa, where 50–80 year-old vines grow in stony soils. The area has a relatively cool climate, influenced by the nearby Atlantic, which helps retain freshness and acidity in the grapes while the warm, dry growing season brings ripe fruit. Made mainly from Tempranillo with Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with indigenous yeasts in a large oak vat, with some whole bunches included. The wine is then aged for around eight months, resulting in a fresh, floral and finely textured take on traditional Rioja.
